Taxonomy

Sarawak, Sg. Ujug. The male lectotype of Striglina asinina Warren, 1899a designated by Whalley (1976:51) from Sulawesi (Sula Mangoli) is in the NHM, genitalia slide #13318. The female paratype of Striglina asinina Warren, 1899a is also in the NHM (Mi7289) genitalia slide #13505. TL West Papua (Utakwa River) (Warren, 1899a:8). Syn. Plagiosella fuliginosa Rothschild, 1915:110. Syn. Striglina bivittata fuliginosa sensu Rothschild, 1915:110 (as a ssp. of S.asinina Warren, 1899a) is in NHM (Mi7289) NHM genitalia slide #13505, Syn. n. (Whalley, 1976:51).

Description

35-45mm. A medium sized species which shows considerable variability in Un and Up brown color and size. Although there is variation in the process below the uncus, no sspp. are descibed. The FW is dark brownish black with a slight purple sheen and a white fringe and black spots along the costa. There is indistinct darker speckling over the whole wings and an indistinct broad curving median band on the FW. The males have long hair-like scales on the hind femur and tibia.

Distribution & Habitat

Thailand, W. Malaysia, Singapore, Sarawak, Java, Sulawesi, Philippines, West Papua, PNG, New Britain, Louisiade Arch., Australia (Q). Lowland primary and secondary forest; 250m.

Life History & Pest Status

A minor pest as a leaf roller on Theobroma cacao (Sterculiaceae), cocoa and Nephelium lappaceum, rambutan, Pometia pinnata (Sapindaceae), Trichospermum pleiostigma (Malvaceae), Irvingia malayana, (Irvingiaceae), Quisqualis indica & Terminalia alata (Combretaceae) Rangoon creeper and Indian laurel (Whalley, 1976; CATS [Accessed Sept. 2008]; HOSTS [Accessed Nov. 2008]).
