Rhodoneura salmo Warren, 1904;Plate 2;  RTS #436

Taxonomy

Image is of the same specimen as figured in RTS; Brunei, Bkt. Bedawan. The holotype of Banisia salmo (Warren, 1904:483) is from Sarawak (Baram District). Rhodoneura lateritiata Hampson, 1906:120, is probably a ssp. of salmo. Ms. syn. n. and stat. n. as a ssp. (Shaffer, 2000 LepIndex), but this needs confirmation.

Description

This is a handsome uniform red or pink-brown small to medium sized species. The FW bases may be slightly blotchy but although fine reticulated lines are present, especially on the HW, there are few definite marks. Unlike the similar R. plinthochroa it has no spot or darker patch near the HW Costa. Rhodoneura lateritiata Hampson, 1906 is similar to salmo and although considered distinct by RTS (p.136), it is now considered to be a ssp. It is more orange-brown and on the FW Un are three short black lines following the course of veins R4, R5& M1. This marking is absent in R. salmo salmo. See also the similar R. ritteri above.
