Genus Picromastis  Meyrick, 1933

Type species: leucoschista Meyrick (1933:433) is in the NHM.  A valid genus, lectotype designation Whalley (1964:124). Shaffer & Nielsen (1996) revived this genus from synonymy with  an erroneous concept of Hypolamprus Hampson [1893] 1892.

Generic description: Proboscis developed. Antennae filiform and simple in both sexes and slightly over half the wing length in both sexes. Maxillary palpi absent. Labial palpi are long with appressed scales, the second segment curved and ascending. The terminal segment is longer or much longer than the second segment and is obliquely ascending, straight, cylindrical and slender. The veins 8 & 9 [R3+R4] of the FW are stalked. On the HW the veins 3 & 5 [Cu1A & M2] are rather approximated to the base and vein 7 [R5] is shortly approximated to vein 8 [R4] beyond the cell then diverging. Distinguished from Hypolamprus by the palpi.

Picrostomastis is an Australasian genus, with about a dozen species. Six are from SE Asia (RTS:132). Small to medium sized brown, reddish or pale species, typically with a squarish HW and often with a silky appearance.

The Picromastis curiosa Inoue (1993) group (here including Picrostomastis spp. 3 & 4) forms a distinctive group of large morphotypes which superficially resemble Herdonia but may be better placed in a new genus.
