Taxonomy

Male paratype, Indonesia, Sumatra, Hwy II nr Prapat. The holotype of Herdonia pulchella Inoue, 1993 from Thailand (Khao Luang NP) is in the NSM Tokyo. Paratypes from Sumatra are in the JHRT Coll. and in the NHM (Mi7449). (Inoue.1993:138 fig’d; Inoue, 2001: 312, & figs). Note that the RTS illustration (pl.21, fig.20) of their taxon #411 is of H. subpulchella Inoue 2001 and not H. pulchella Inoue 1993 as titled. (Inoue, 2001:313)

Description

24-39mm.The FW is pale with no grey across the cell. Towards the termen it becomes faintly reddish brown. There is a patch of black reticulation near the outer rear margin of the FW and two faint square red-brown patches at the termen, one near the apex, the other at the tornus. The termen is very pale red-brown and the long white fringe scales are tipped with deeper red-brown.

Sumatra, Thailand, W. Malaysia, Sabah, Brunei. Lowland forest; <600m.

Similar spp.

See Plates. Male antennal lamellae are similar to H. apoensis but a little more oblong. These are shorter than in H. osacesalis. For differences see H.subpulchella which is larger but has similar patterning. They are best distinguished by genitalia.
