Taxonomy

Female paratype, Thailand, Chiang Mai. The male holotype of Herdonia gigantea Inoue, 1993 is from Thailand (Chiang Mai) as are the paratypes. They are in the NHM (Mi7448) (Inoue 1993: 144 & figs.). Ssp. vietnamensis Inoue (1993). The paratype from N. Vietnam (Cuc Phuong) is in NHM (Mi7448). The male genitalia are almost identical with the nominate subspecies. (Inoue 1993: 144 & figs., Inoue 2001: 319, & figs.).

Description

Male 53mm, Female 64mm. As its name suggests this is a very large species, especially the female, but it has typical Herdonia patterning. The male antennal rami are about twice the width of the shaft. The FW costa is dark. The HW has a white translucent background with a diffuse pale brown marginal area which narrows to the tornus.
