Taxonomy

Ssp. bipuncta; Sarawak, foot of Gg. Dulit. The holotype of Varnia ignita Walker, [1866] 1865:825 is from Sylhet, Bangladesh and is in the NHM (Mi7279). Once synonymised with D. miniata but reinstated as a good species by Shaffer (Ms. stat. rev. LepIndex). Syn. Dysodia bipuncta Warren, 1900:100. TL Perak, Gg. Ijau, Ms. syn. n. and stat. n. as a ssp. (Shaffer 1984, LepIndex).

Description

40mm. A predominantly orange-brown species, with an indistinct median fascia on both wings. There are two tiny fenestrae on the costal area of the HW. Note the very distinctive brown hairy hind tibiae and the prominent eversible brush organs on the abdomen of the males. Three sspp. can be recognized. Ssp. ignita Walker, [1866] 1865:825, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Sarawak. Ssp. bipuncta Warren, 1900, W Malaysia, Sarawak, Java. Ssp. 1 unnamed from Burma [Myanmar] is very dark.

Distribution & Habitat

Sri Lanka, Assam, Sikkim, Bangladesh, Burma [Myanmar], W. Malaysia, Sarawak, Java. Lowland to lower montane.

Life History & Pest Status

Feeds on leaves of Atalantia sp. (Rutaceae); Croton aromaticus, C. laevigatus (Euphorbiaceae) and Aglaia lowii(Meliaceae).
