Description

This is a small to medium sized species with a patchy reticulate pattern in reddish grey. There are a few black spots near the FW apices. Some specimens show a prominent white spot on the penultimate abdominal segment. The species shows large individual variability within the limits of the reticulate and spotted patterning. C. hypargyra Hampson, 1893 is similar in pattern with a gold scaled retinaculum but in place of the two lines of black and metallic silver-blue scales on underside of the FW Costa it has a series of golden scales.
